The impressive 2017 Rubicon has plenty of structure from its 68% Cabernet sauvignon back bone but real elegance and complexity too, potentially a great Rubicon.
Hannes Myburghs Rubicon has a cult following, sourced from his famous old Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch. The Rubicon was the first Bordeaux blend made in South Africa back in 1980 and is still recognised as one of the best. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot vinified separately before the final blend is made by Hannes and cellar master Chris Williams.
The impressive 2017 vintage is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon 68% along with Merlot 16% Cabernet Franc 12% 4% Petit Verdot all aged separately in 300l French oak casks 60% new. With deep colour in the glass and an initially restrained nose which soon opens up with cassis and plums with liquorice and cedar notes. this has plenty of guts but still has the classic Rubicon elegance that we all love. A great vintage.
Style: medium-full bodied, complex, long
Maturity: drinking now but this will keep very well
