91 Points - International Wine Report - Six generations and nearly 2 centuries of work have gone into building this superb vineyard. Jérôme Lafonand and his wife follow the principals used by their ancestors in 1850 with the help of todays technology. This is a delicious medium bodied wine made up of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon it displays a wonderful balance of fruit and acidity, leading up to the finish where red cherry and tobacco notes linger on. Exceptional value for a 90+point rated wine.

About the Producer

Six generations and nearly 2 centuries of work have gone into building this superb vineyard. Some serious renovation work and investment in the property began in 1974, financed by the Denechaud family and is continued today by their daughter and son in law Jérôme Lafon. These 2 young winemakers follow the principals used by their ancestors in 1850 with the help of todays technology. They have increased their family domaine to over 60 hectares and 3 properties in the Cotes de Blaye and Côtes de Bourg.

Jérôme Lafon is a massively competent winemaker who works in complete discretion. He makes wonderful wines because of his attention to detail in every aspect of the winemaking process. Nothing from vine to bottle is outside of his consideration. He himself proclaims that his wines are made to the Bordelais traditions and respect their individual terroir. Their investment in new technologies not only encourage improvement in quality but respect nature.

The 2016 Château Tertre de Viaud Côtes du Bourg begins with inviting aromatics of cherries, red currants, tobacco, wild herbs, tobacco, spices and a mineral character that all takes shape in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, polished tannins and a mineral-laced cored which expands through the finish. This is accessible now and should start to evolve beautifully with some extended bottle age over the course of the next five years.
