The Pol Couronne NV, recently featured in The Independent as the ‘Indy Best
Buy’, is a classy champagne that boasts a perfect balance between the crispness
of the Chardonnay, structure of the Pinot Noir and roundness of the Pinot
Meunier. The use of 40% reserve wines and 42 months of lees ageing adds an
interesting complexity and richness to the wine. Pol Couronne NV can be enjoyed
on its own but also pairs beautifully with prawn ravioli or risotto with green
asparagus and mushrooms.
"A Champagne to pop open for a weekend brunch, this is refreshing and lively
with a chiselled limestone structure and grapefruit acidity. Made from almost
equal parts chardonnay, pinot meunier and pinot noir, the flavours are
well-balanced, while the use of 40 per cent reserve wines and 42 months on the
lees gives a nice rounded complexity. It’s great quality and with change from
£30, you certainly won’t feel like a muggins." "20 best champagnes" Nuria
Stylianou, The Independent (Dec-2020)
"Impressive complexity and balance… sophisticated and accessible champagne" Tom
Harrow, Honest Grapes and Financial Times ‘How to Spend It’
The Pol Couronne Champagne House was founded in 1887. For over a century,
sustainable vineyard practices and winemaking traditions have been used to
create characterful and high quality wines. Pol Couronne embraces the complexity
of assemblage (the blending of the grapes within a wine) by working with
vineyards across the Champagne region that best emphasise the character of each
varietal. For example, the sandy-clay soils of Avize produce a special
minerality within the Chardonnay grape that adds linearity and freshness to
their wine.
"The Pol Couronne is a pretty pale gold colour with fine bubbles. An expressive
nose that opens with notes of almonds, citrus, hay and field flowers, notes of
dried fruit. The mouth is well balanced, lively and delicate. A nice dynamism
revealed by notes of grapefruit. The dosage allows the wine to express itself
fully on acidulated, limestone notes, all with a beautiful length."
