The Chateau Changyu Moser XV () Purple Air Comes From The East is the iconic top wine made in the style of a high-end burgundy and coming from an area with a climate similar to Bordeaux. With an acidity of 5.4 g / l, this is a bordeaux and its approach to "la frecheur".
The wine is made by Lenz M. Moser - the chief winemaker Chateau Changyu Moser XV who spends the entire harvest period in Ningxia. The wine is also bottled Mise en bouteille au château / Estate Bottled and the 2016 vintage is the 2nd vintage of this iconic wine. Only 6,300 bottles of this truly special and ultra rare wine were made. The wine is aged in barriques in the château's barrel cellar for 24 months. Partly on new French oak and partly 2nd and 3rd year.
The wine is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with beautiful floral aromas on the nose with complex notes of red and dark berries, with savory hints of cedar, tobacco and a warm touch of vanilla through a subtle wood treatment - all in perfect harmony, with a built-in ' feel good' factor.
Luxurious, generous and with a wonderful freshness in the mouth. A top wine from Ningxia with a focus on elegance and finesse. The wine is very balanced and has the intensity and complexity without being overbearing or overpowering.
Lenz M. Moser:
"We believe this wine will pave the way for a new breed of Ningxia wines, focusing on the pure pleasure of drinking."
As it is my second year of harvest, it is difficult to say when the highest level of drinking will be reached, but given the quality of the grapes at harvest, it will drink well for at least 15 years. The wine is still super young, but already a pleasure to enjoy.
It's definitely the best red I've ever made. We have worked very hard to bring this new wine style to life. And I will dedicate this very special creation to the leaders of Changyu and everyone involved in making this wine."
There are currently about 900 wineries in China (compared to Australia: 2,000 - US: 7,100 - France: 27,000 - Austria: 6,500 - Germany: 6,500). Nearly 800,000 hectares are planted with vines, making China the sixth largest wine-producing country by area, producing approximately 13 million hectoliters of wine per year.
Ningxia is located about 1,330 kilometers west of Beijing. It is located in Central West China on the edge of the Gobi Desert and feeds on the Yellow River which originates in the clean and natural Tibetan Plateau. With the aridity of the land and longer hours of sunlight than usual during the growing season (about 3,000 - compared to the 2,052 hour average of Bordeaux), the berries are allowed to fully ripen, developing a full fruit character. The grapes have ideal growing conditions in the Helan Mountains, at 1100 meters above sea level. The altitude and the desert with its hot daytime temperatures and cold nights help the wines maintain their freshness and this is why Chinese wines from this region are on the rise.
