Love and respect for nature and its vineyards characterize owner Francesco Illy. As a member of the famous Illy family, known for its high quality coffee and espresso, it is only natural for Francesco to strive for excellence. You can taste this in the beautiful biodynamic wines that he produces on his 54 hectare estate in Tuscany.
The unique wines of Podere Le Ripi have been achieved by, against the expectations of experts, have proved particularly successful. By planting the vines much closer together than usual, the roots are forced to go deep into the ground, thereby absorbing the different minerals from the various geological layers. Together with the great value that Podere Le Ripi attaches to a natural soil with flowers and other organisms without the addition of chemicals, a special terroir is created with recognizable aromas and structure. Podere Le Ripi's wines rest in oak barrels for 36 months or more. Then they are matured for 1 to 3 years in the bottle in the cellar before they are sold. The wines are characterized by special finesse, fruit, harmony and sufficient strength.
Francesco Illy makes the wines together with Sebastian Nasello, an enologist who has been working at Podere Le Ripi since 2012. In February 2016 Sebastian Nasello won the Giulio Gambelli 2016 prize.
Like the Brunello Amore e Magia, the more accessible Podere le Ripi 2016 Rosso di Montalcino Sogni e Follia shows a beautiful dark ruby red color with purple accents. The bouquet is also very direct and expressive. In the nose red cherry, raspberry and bitter almond. The fruit for this wine comes from a six hectare estate on the west side of Montalcino, in the Camigliano or Pian delle Vigne area, with sandy limestone soils and some alluvial elements. This Rosso is aged in large oak barrels and then goes into cement for several months for final integration. About 25,000 bottles were made. The wine was bottled in September 2018 and released in January 2020.
