Chateau Musar is one of the most special wine estates in the world. On the one hand, this is the location, the Lebanese Bekaa Valley, on the other hand, they still use a completely traditional method. The vineyards are located on siliceous lime-clay soils at an altitude of about 1000 meters. The long, warm summers guarantee excellent ripening of the grapes. Owner Serge Hochar, who was named Winemaker of the Year by the English magazine Decanter Magazine in the past, has also received his wine training in France.
The red Château Musar derives its character from the large proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, which give this wine a Bordeaux-like appearance. The aging for 24 months in oak barrels from the Nevers adds the necessary complexity and flavours. Before the wine is released on the market, it is aged for at least 3-5 years in the cellars of the château, as it is not yet ready to be drunk. The family ultimately decides which vintage is released when. This means that it already has a delicious taste when it comes to the market, completely ready to enjoy immediately, but according to Musar this wine only gets better with the years and has a drinking window of 2030+
The vintage one had in 2004 only occurs once every ten years on average. The winter in Lebanon was fairly consistent with previous years, with snow until March, spring to June, followed by a very mild and mild summer. Fresh, cool air dominated the summer months, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and steadily. The whole year was relatively cool without extreme heat. All this resulted in a vintage with good acidity, so the wine has a good backbone and long aging potential. With the new years of Musar we can always have something from their Library (with wines from 1920) hitchhiking and we received this 2004 at the end of spring 2022. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan
The wine spent 9 months in cement vats and then a year in French oak barrels of Nevers and the final blend of Cabernet
Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan rested in barrels for a further 9 months before being bottled and transferred to the
Chateau Musar cellars high in the mountains near Ghazir to begin its journey of maturation and development of nearly 8 years (and now in 2022 there is still a significant amount of 2004).
The 2004 has a deep burgundy color with a nose of ripe fruit, plums, cherries, figs, cinnamon and cloves. Follow the aromas
with a taste full of rich black and red fruit plums and prunes dominate with pomegranate, baked cherries and a bit of cinnamon. An intensely concentrated powerful vintage with fine soft tannins and a spicy, warming finish.
