Elegant and rich with ripe citrus and guava characters underpinned by a nice bite of acidity. Savoury characters and creamy texture from four months lees ageing and daily battonage. This is serious wine, its instantly eye catching and flattering but its no flirt, this is properly grown up stuff. Located on the left bank of the River Duero, the winery dedicates itself to the production of high quality white wines from their meticulously cared for vineyards, which were planted three decades ago in the destrict of La Seca, one of the most highly renowned 'cru' of the region. Since the first vintage in 2004, Bodegas Naia has established itself as one of Ruedas star producers. Grapes come from the estates 21 hectares in La Seca (where thick gravel over clay subsoil creates fine, incisive wines with distinct minerality) and grapes bought in from a further 20 hectares. Winemaker Eulogio Calleja crafts wines with great depth, which like the striking labels, stand out from the crowd. While most modern Rueda tends to be in a simple, aromatic, technological style, here the maturity of the vines (30-100 years), strict grape selection and extended lees ageing give wines with delicacy, ripe yet restrained stone fruit characters, lovely texture and the ability to age. In the Vineyard The grapes come from 98 acres of vineyards, the majority of which are 26 years old (and 5 acres of which are ungrafted 90 year old Verdejo vines)all located in La Seca. In the Winery 12% aged in new oak, 88% aged in stainless steel. Press Quotes 2010 Vintage: 92 points - Guia Penin 2012 2010 Vintage: 100% Verdejo but with 12% of the wine fermented and aged in French oak. This fragrant, medium-bodied offering displays enticing aromatics along with a round, smooth-textured mouth-feel likely due to its partial exposure to oak. It is a lovely, refreshing wine for enjoying over the next 2-3 years. 89 points. Dr Jay Miller, Wine Advocate (195) 30th June 2011
