Christian Moueix now the owner of Pétrus in Bordeaux began his love affair with the Napa Valley and its wines while studying at U.C. Davis in 1968 and 1969. After many years of searching for the ideal vineyard location, in 1982 he entered into a joint venture with Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, the daughters of John Daniel, who made Inglenook Cask Selection from the famed Napanook vineyard in Yountville, California. The first vintage of Dominus was in 1983, four years after the pioneering Bordeaux/Napa collaboration at Opus One.
